Whistler Gravity Guides | MEESH'S WHISTLER REPORT - FIRST SNOWFALL & Treble Cone Recap

Whistler Gravity Guides Skiing & Mountain Biking Lessons, Tours, Instruction

Posted: 22. September 2008

Whistler, BC – Well, we woke up today, September 22, to 5 cm of fresh snow in the Alpine. It was a pretty sight to see the mountain covered in white this morning. Thoughts of freshies are creeping into my dreams already. Official opening day is scheduled as November 27th but we are hoping for an early opening.

I’ve already had a taste of Winter as I spend close to 3 weeks in New Zealand skiing Treble Cone with YES. In a word it was FANTASTIC. Check out the video. I really enjoyed my time there. It helped that the snow was fantastic and the slopes empty. Wanaka is a beautiful town and the surrounding area is stunning. It’s nice to see some unspoiled wilderness still exists.

The day starts with an exciting ride up the access road, thank goodness we had a great bus driver that took care of it for us. Treble Cone only has 2 lifts, but the terrain is quite good. Great teaching terrain with great groomers, fun natural gullies and the snow quality was amazing. We had knee deep light snow on more than one occasion, and with nobody there we were getting freshies in the afternoon.

There is also great steeps and plenty of challenges, especially in the Motatapu Basin. The Chutes and Hollywood basin were quite fun, just don’t miss the traverse line out or its quite the hike. All in all a great trip and I hope to be back next year. It was also great to see “Big Tum” and Sean & Jules again. It’s been awhile since Thredbo.

Still working on the house, never-ending renos, and then Margie and myself are off to Australia for the month of October. Should be a great vacation and we are heading back to Port Douglas for our fifth wedding anniversary.

Until next time, may the snowflakes dance in your heads.
