MEESH'S WHISTLER REPORT - Happy New Year, base hits 300cm

Posted: 3. January 2007

Whistler, BC – Before we talk of the New Year, let’s remember the end of 2006. Since Nov. 1, 691 cm of snow (22.6 ft) has fallen on our blessed slopes. The best start to a season I can remember. Most of it has been of the lighter kind as temperatures have been behaving…..up until now. Which brings us into 2007. Totals as of Jan 2nd, 764 cm (25 ft). Woke up yesterday (2nd) to 50 cm of fresh overnight. { the cm stands for cementimetres}. Pineapple express had moved in and the snow was heavy to say the least.

Got up the 8:00 gondie for morning session which consisted of a bacon & egg roll and tea. Fresh tracks had been cancelled that morning due to ice and slippage on the gondie line. Winds were howling and Green and Red zones didn’t have clearance. A bomb they dropped off of Red (Upper Insanity) didn’t go off, so they had to clear that before opening Red. Once Green & Red opened, the winds picked up and everything was shut due to wind. Only chairs open were: Olympic, lower Gondie, Fitz, Magic, Excalibur and Excelerator. Trees were down everywhere and the sounds of chainsaws filled the valley.

So after waiting at Garbo, we heading to the B-Side and up Excelerator. Winds were strong but the skiing was OK. Over the knee deep down Black Magic was fun but hard work pushing through the schmoo. After a few laps, they closed the Blackcomb Gondie, so in effect we had almost a private ski aea off the Excelerator chair. Made in right until last chair at 15:00 then straight to the GLC for a well deserved beverage. All in all, a good day on the hill. Temps are supposed to drop tonight with snow in the forecast all week, so things should get better.

Well, it’s the 3rd today and we just hit 300 cm for our base!!!! Snowfall is up to 791 cm with yesterdays snow. What a great start to the season.

All the best to everyone in 2007, hope to see you on the slopes here in Whistler. Sorry, no photos today…...let’s just say the weather didn’t co-operate!!! :-)
