MEESH'S WHISTLER REPORT - Snowing again...then rain

Posted: 20. December 2005

Whistler, BC – Well, after seeing far too much sun for December, it is finally snowing again in Whistler. It snowed pretty much all day today for a small accumulation of around 5 cm. Not much but much needed. Visiblility was variable ie; not good in Alpine, OK half way down Harmony, but the little bit of snow really helped soften things up. Runs of the day were Side-Saddle Right and Left, Kaliedoscope to Boomer Bowl (traverse to McKoneys nasty thou) and Horseshoe 6. Groomers are doing a great job, but with the higher number of skiers, the runs are getting icy. Ski-out to Whistler was a zoo at 3:00.

Well, with both Detlef and Robbie sightings, the season is officailly underway. (Poor coaches at Murray Camps and Weekend Esprit.) Fingers crossed that they have brought the snow with them. Forecast is for this system to last all week with varying freezing levels, so let’s hope for the best. All I want for Christmas is some powder snow!!! (lots of it)

Things are busy with the holidays. Hopefully this snow will open up more areas on the mountain. Ski-outs are now open with the exception of Creekside, but with all the snowmaking they are doing there, it shouldn’t be too much longer until we are skiing to Dusty’s. That’s all for now, must go decorate the tree and do the snow dance.

Well, it’s the next day and its pissing down rain. Had about an inch of solid ice on the car this morning, which I don’t have to say was a bitch to get off. Anyways, rained to the top off and on all day. Peak wasn’t running due to wind and Harmony shut early for the same reason. Around 4:00, the heavens opened up in the village, so who knows what’s happening up there, will keep you posted. Skiing wasn’t bad, wasn’t good either. Lots of bare spots are opening up and the snow is getting heavy and rotten. Lots of the bumps are falling apart under you. That being said, Kadiedoscope to Boomer was still the choice, although the traverse out is getting worse. Snow was heavy but consistent. Horseshoe 6 was also good, but more rocks are visible. Little Whistler was nice but no vis. Green Acres bumps are all right but lots of rocks to avoid and small trees. Some groomed runs getting thin though, most notably G.S., Lower Whiskey Jack and Toliet Bowl. At least the rain softened up the ice and kept the crowds away. Tomorrow’s another day and we’ll see what it brings.
