Niseko, Japan – Yes, that’s right, I’m in Japan for 3 weeks. In the Hokkaido region on the North Island, in Niseko working for the YES program here. It’s been quite the culture change but 3 days of straight snow helps get around that. Had a great day the first day on the slopes. Sun was shining and the skiing was great. It’s a great feeling when your skiing down the run and staring at a volcano in front of you.

The area here is great. It takes a bit to get used to the lift systems though as some of the lifts don’t really go anywhere. The area started out as 4 separate lift operators so none of the lifts really connect. That being said, the snow is great. Super light and plentiful. We have had over 60cm in the last 4 days and no crowds. Unfortunately, like Whistler, the winds tend to be very strong. So the upper part of the mountain has been closed for the last 3 days, but opened today.

The skiing today was amazing, starting with one of the best warm-up runs of the year. 8 face shots in waist deep light snow. And then the day just got better. Powder run after powder run after powder run after powder run… well you get the idea. Now I know why people rave about Japanese powder. Truely a great day. Everything here is great from the food, to the people, to the snow. Here’s a photo to sum everything up.
